See Europe Differently

Let's talk about river cruising! One of the best ways to see the world.

Where Can You River Cruise?

Drumroll,… you can embark on a river cruise almost anywhere in the world! Europe is the most popular destination, but cruises also wind through scenic rivers in Asia, Africa, and South America. Here are some top recommendations for first-timers:

  • Rhine River – Sail past quaint villages, captivating castles, and lush forests in Germany and France before reaching vibrant Amsterdam.

  • Danube River – Dive into the charm of Old World Europe in Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest, with adventures like castle hikes, wine tastings, and bike tours.

  • Nile River – Begin in Cairo, then journey through Luxor, Edfu, and Aswan for views of ancient wonders like the Sphinx and Pyramids of Giza.

  • Magdalena River – Discover Colombia’s vibrant culture with lively entertainment, coffee tastings, and wildlife experiences.

Many European river cruises start or end in incredible cities like Basel, Amsterdam, or Budapest. Planning a few extra days to explore is well worth it—you’ve traveled all this way, after all!

When’s the Best Time to River Cruise?

While river cruises are available year-round, the best time often depends on the region. Europe, for example, shines in late spring, early summer, and fall when the weather is ideal for sightseeing. You could consider these iconic seasons, in Europe:

  • Tulip Time – Spring in the Netherlands is picture-perfect with tulips, windmills, & Dutch treats like waffles & cheese.

  • Christmas Markets – Celebrate at Europe’s traditional markets in places like Vienna and Strasbourg, where mulled wine, holiday lights, and unique gifts abound.

Why Consider a River Cruise Over a Land Itinerary?

River cruising can be a great way to explore multiple countries affordably, especially in Europe. With rising travel costs, a river cruise bundles the essentials—lodging, meals, and excursions—into one seamless experience, often for less than a traditional land trip.

River cruises don’t have to compete with the rising costs of transportation and hotels, so the prices can be more reasonable than you might expect. On average, assume a starting point of $4,600 per person for a week-long, all-inclusive journey through Europe.

How Do You Know If River Cruising is Right for You?

Do you love the idea of only unpacking once? If you prefer a relaxed travel pace, love having logistics handled, or are planning a multi-generational trip, you’ll find river cruising perfect. And don't worry about getting sea sick - it's not the same as ocean cruising.

Misconceptions about River Cruising

It's Only for Older Travelers

While river cruises do attract mature travelers, younger guests are increasingly booking them too—especially with lines like AmaWaterways and Uniworld offering active excursions, wine tastings, and even biking tours.

There's Nothing to Do Onboard

Unlike ocean cruises with massive entertainment complexes, river cruises focus on cultural enrichment, offering lectures, cooking classes, live music, and small-group excursions. Some lines even have pools, gyms, and wellness programs.

It's Just Like an Ocean Cruise—But on a River

River cruises are more intimate, usually with fewer than 200 guests, and emphasize destination immersion with frequent stops and longer stays in port. You also won’t find casinos or large Broadway-style shows.

All River Cruises Are the Same

Different cruise lines offer different styles—luxury (e.g., Scenic, Uniworld), active (e.g., AmaWaterways), or more budget-friendly options (e.g., Viking). Routes also vary dramatically, from Europe's Danube and Rhine to the Mekong, Amazon, or Nile.

You’ll Get Seasick

Nope! River cruising is incredibly smooth, with no ocean swells. If you’re prone to motion sickness, a river cruise is a much safer bet than an ocean voyage.

It's Too Slow-Paced

While river cruising is about relaxation, many itineraries offer biking, hiking, and kayaking excursions. Some lines even have dedicated wellness hosts.

The Food is Just Okay

Many river cruise lines focus on local cuisine and fresh ingredients. Some even partner with Michelin-star chefs or offer wine-pairing menus, making dining an elevated experience.

It’s Too Expensive

While river cruises can seem pricey, they’re often more inclusive than ocean cruises—covering shore excursions, drinks, and Wi-Fi. When compared to land-based European travel with hotels, transport, and meals, the value can be excellent.

You’re Stuck on the Ship All the Time

Unlike ocean cruises with long sea days, river cruises dock frequently—sometimes in the heart of a city—allowing for easy exploration.

You Can Only Do River Cruises in Europe

While Europe is the most popular region, river cruising exists worldwide—on the Nile in Egypt, the Mekong in Southeast Asia, the Amazon in South America, and even the Mississippi in the U.S.

Before you go, I have a story for you.

I had a friend book a cruise the other day on his own, because he saw a Facebook ad.

I “took over” the booking and was able to add $100 of shipboard credit. (It pays to book with an advisor, my friends!) He mentioned to me that his trip is costing more than anticipated, and I wasn’t surprised he felt that way.

1. Cruise ads won’t tell you that shore excursions, WiFi, Bev plans, alcohol etc are ADDITIONAL. All you see is a misleading price and it seems like a steal.

2. Cruise ads won’t tell you if their ship is a good fit for what you love to do, or the vibe of travel you like.

3. At first glance, certain cruise packages can seem like SUCH a great price, but don’t forget to consider the added expenses of pre and post-cruise hotels, tours, travel insurance, dining, flights, etc.

All that to say - I strongly suggest to speak with an advisor to get professional advice and guidance BEFORE booking, so you aren’t surprised with cost, and so you get matched with the right cruise line.

But, if you have already booked, don’t fret! I love the energy and I’m so happy you’re sailing. I’m always happy to see if I can hop in and add advisor perks, and help guide the rest of your vacation.
